What Are Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are very common non-cancerous growths (tumors) of the uterus. Approximately 40 percent of Caucasian women and 60 percent of African American women over the age of 35 will develop fibroids in their lifetime. Uterine fibroids have no size limitation. They can often be as large as a grapefruit. While these are benign (non-cancerous) tumors, they do cause many problems. Many of these symptoms are related to the pressure caused by these abnormal masses. Overall, the symptoms can be very debilitating.

Women suffering from the symptoms of uterine fibroids often find their lives very compromised. As a result, it is a high priority to seek appropriate treatment. Treatment options vary from newer minimally invasive solutions (uterine fibroid embolization) to traditional surgery (laparoscopic or open) completed by a gynecologist.
